About Aztec Symbology

Aztec Code is a group of two-dimensional (2D) barcode types used to store data in a graphical format. Such barcodes are composed of square modules arranged in specific patterns, with unique finder patterns in the center of the barcode image. Aztec Code was developed in 1995 by Andrew Longacre and Robert Hussey at Welch Allyn, Inc. It provides higher reading accuracy than other 2D barcode types and has become a widely used specification in a variety of industries. Aztec Code is a highly efficient barcode type, as it can encode large amounts of data in a limited space. Supported data types include text, numbers, and binary data. Aztec Code is resistant to damage, as it supports Reed Solomon error correction, which allows restoring and then reading barcode images with missing parts or distortions.
The Aztec Code barcode group includes three subtypes:

Aztec Features

The Aztec Code standard is implemented in a variety of applications and industries. For example, it is widely used in such spheres, as transportation and logistics, healthcare, retail, entertainment industry, government applications, and many others.

  • High Data Capacity: Aztec Code offers a high data capacity and can store large amounts of information in a compact space. It can encode up to 2,000 characters and is suitable for applications requiring extensive data storage, such as transportation tickets and identification cards.
  • Error Correction: One of the key strengths of Aztec Code is its robust error correction capabilities. It utilizes Reed-Solomon error correction algorithms to ensure accurate decoding even in cases where the barcode image is damaged or distorted.
  • Scalability: Aztec Code can be easily resized without deteriorating scanning capacity. It can be adapted to different print sizes and resolutions to conform to the requirements of various applications and printing technologies.

Applications:

  • Ticketing and Access Control: Aztec Code is commonly used in ticketing systems for events, public transportation, and other access control scenarios. It enables secure and efficient scanning of tickets, providing quick validation and entry for attendees.
  • Mobile Marketing: Aztec Code barcodes are utilized in mobile marketing campaigns, where they can be scanned by smartphones and mobile devices to provide customers with product information, discounts, or promotional offers.
  • Identification Cards: The high data capacity and error correction capabilities of Aztec Code make it suitable for encoding personal information on identification cards, such as driver's licenses or employee ID cards. It ensures accurate data capture and reliable identification verification.
  • Inventory Management: The Aztec Code standard is often applied in inventory management systems, allowing for efficient tracking of products and assets. It enables real-time stock monitoring, streamlined supply chain operations, and accurate inventory reconciliation.

The high data capacity, scalability and support of error correction make Aztec Code a reliable solution for a wide range of applications. This 2D barcode type benefits from efficient data encoding, secure scanning, and accurate decoding. With its ability to store large portions of information in a compact format, Aztec Code is viewed as a valuable tool for businesses, organizations, and industries seeking reliable barcode solutions.
