Convert STL to OBJ via Python

Instantly convert STL to OBJ without needing AutoCAD® or any other rendering software.

How to Convert STL to OBJ Using Python

In order to convert STL to OBJ, we’ll use Aspose.CAD for Python API which is a feature-rich, powerful and easy to use document manipulation and conversion API for Python platform. Open NPM package manager, search for Aspose.CAD and install. You may also use the following command from the Package Manager Console.

Package Manager Console Command

pip install aspose-cad

Steps to Convert STL to OBJ via Python

Python programmers can easily load & convert STL files to OBJ in just a few lines of code.

  1. Load STL file with Image.Load method
  2. Create an instance of ObjOptions class
  3. Call Image.Save method while passing the resultant file path & object of ObjOptions

System Requirements

Before running the Python conversion code, make sure that you have the following prerequisites.

  • Microsoft Windows or a compatible OS with Web browser.
  • Text editors such as Microsoft Visual Studio Code or Notepad or Notepad++.

  • Free App to Convert STL to OBJ

No need to download or setup anything.
No need to write any code.
Just upload your STL file and hit the "Convert" button.
You will instantly get the download link for resultant OBJ file.
Aspose.CAD for Python allows you to read, manipulate, process and export any CAD or BIM drawing file into various vector and raster formats without using AutoCAD or any other additional software. It’s multi-thread safe, cross-OS compatible, allows you to track export progress, and handle individual layers and layouts. Developers can select and convert specific layouts and layers from AutoCAD files and easily track the file conversion process.

STL What is STL File Format?

STL, abbreviation for stereolithrography, is an interchangeable file format that represents 3-dimensional surface geometry. The file format finds its usage in several fields such as rapid prototyping, 3D printing and computer-aided manufacturing. It represents a surface as a series of small triangles, known as facets, where each facet is described by a perpendicular direction and three points representing the vertices of the triangle. Resultant data is used by applications to determine the cross section of the 3D shape to be built by the fabber. There is no information available in the STL file format for representation of colour, texture or other common CAD model attributes.

OBJ What is OBJ File Format?

OBJ files are used by Wavefront’s Advanced Visualizer application to define and store the geometric objects. Backward and forward transmission of geometric data is made possible through OBJ files. Both polygonal geometry like points, lines, texture vertices, faces and free-form geometry (curves and surfaces) are supported by OBJ format. This format does not support animation or information related to light and position of scenes. An OBJ file is usually an end product of the 3D modeling process generated by a CAD (Computer Aided Design). The default order to store vertices is counter-clockwise avoiding explicit declaration of face normals. Though OBJ files declare scale information in a comment line yet no units have been declared for OBJ coordinates.
