In computer graphics, dithering is used to give the appearance of color depth in images on systems with a constrained color palette. A diffusion of colored pixels from the available palette is used in a dithered image to approximate colors that are not present in the palette. The diffusion appears to the human eye as a mingling of the colors contained within it. Dithered photographs are frequently identifiable by a distinctive graininess or speckled appearance, especially when utilizing palettes with few colors. Dithering adds noise or a pattern to an image, and the pattern is frequently obvious. It has been demonstrated that under these conditions, dither produced by blue noise is the least annoying and unattractive.
