FAQ

  • What kinds of protection can be applied?
A password required to open the file, a write protection that makes it read-only unless a password is supplied, and a marked-as-final flag.
  • Is a presentation protected with a password actually encrypted?
Yes, when the open password is used: the file cannot be read without it. Write protection and marked-as-final are conventions honoured by the application, not encryption, so treat them as guidance rather than security.
  • Which formats can carry protection?
PPT, PPTX and ODP. Note that the strength differs: PPTX uses the modern OOXML encryption, while the legacy binary PPT scheme is much weaker and should not be relied on for confidential decks.
  • Can I protect individual shapes rather than the whole file?
Yes. Shapes can be locked against selection, movement, resizing and editing, independently of any password on the presentation itself.
