## Test Conditions

Every row below is the recorded outcome of a script that was executed. Where a library cannot do
something, that is the error its own interpreter raised, not a claim taken from documentation.

- **python-pptx 1.0.2** · **Aspose.Slides for Python via .NET 26.7.0** · CPython 3.12.2, Windows
- The test deck was written **by python-pptx**, so neither library was handed a file shaped by its
  own writer. The `.ppt` and `.odp` copies were converted from it with Aspose.Slides.

**Results are as of 12 August 2026 and hold only for those two versions.** python-pptx is actively
developed; this page is scheduled for re-testing in **February 2027**.

## Where Aspose.Slides for Python Is the Better Choice

**It renders.** python-pptx reads and writes the PPTX file format; it has no rendering engine at
all. Everything that needs pixels — PDF, PNG, HTML, video frames — is available in one library and
absent from the other. There is no slower python-pptx equivalent to fall back on.

**It opens what users actually send you.** Legacy binary `.ppt` and OpenDocument `.odp` both fail in
python-pptx with a `KeyError` from its OPC package reader, because neither is a ZIP package of the
shape it expects. If your input is whatever arrives from a customer, this is the row that decides it.

**It models the parts of a presentation python-pptx skips** — slide transitions and shape
animations, password encryption, and slide cloning that carries layout, master and theme across
files. These are not present-but-limited in python-pptx; the attributes do not exist.

**No Microsoft PowerPoint, on any platform.** Everything runs in-process on Windows, Linux and
macOS, which is what makes it usable on a server, a container or a CI worker.

## Where python-pptx Is the Better Choice

**It is free and MIT-licensed.** Aspose.Slides is commercial: used without a licence it runs, but
stamps every export with an *Evaluation only* notice — the same three-slide deck exported to PDF at
41,870 bytes licensed and 61,270 bytes unlicensed. If your budget for a library is zero, that is the
end of the comparison.

**It is far smaller and simpler to deploy.** Measured in the same environment, python-pptx and all
its dependencies occupy **28.3 MB** against Aspose.Slides' **196.6 MB**. It is pure Python plus
`lxml` and `Pillow`, with no licence file to distribute.

**Its API is smaller and quicker to learn** for the job it is built for. If the task is "generate a
`.pptx` report from data", python-pptx does it well — and charts are not a gap either:

The first four rows are why python-pptx is popular: for reading and writing PPTX content it is a
capable library, and nothing below takes that away.

The rows that say **No** are not opinions. python-pptx's `Presentation.save()` takes a filename and
nothing else, so saving under a `.pdf` name produces a ZIP — a `.pptx` with the wrong extension.
`.ppt` and `.odp` raise `KeyError` from the OPC package reader. `Slide` has no transition or timeline
attribute, `Presentation` has no protection attribute, and `Slides.add_slide()` takes a layout rather
than a slide, so there is no supported way to copy a formatted slide between files.

## Convert a presentation to PDF

The most common reason to look past python-pptx. It has no rendering engine, so there is no API to
call; Aspose.Slides renders the deck directly, with no Microsoft PowerPoint installed.

## Render a slide to an image

Thumbnails and previews need a raster of the slide as it would appear on screen. This is rendering
rather than file manipulation, which is why python-pptx does not offer it.

## Export a presentation to video

Aspose.Slides renders the presentation's animation timeline to a sequence of frames.
`PresentationEnumerableFramesGenerator` takes the presentation and a frame rate, and
`enumerate_frames()` yields one frame per tick, honouring slide transitions, shape animations and
each slide's advance time. In the run behind this page a three-slide deck at 30 fps produced 180
PNG frames.

**What the library gives you is frames, not a container file.** There is no `save("deck.mp4")`:
turning the frames into MP4, WebM or GIF is a separate step with an encoder such as FFmpeg, which
also decides codec, bitrate and audio. That split is deliberate — encoder choice belongs to your
pipeline — but it does mean "export to video" is two stages, and the second one is not this library.
python-pptx has no equivalent to either stage.

## Open a legacy binary .ppt file

`.ppt` is not a ZIP package, so a library built on the OOXML package format cannot open it. If your
input is whatever users upload, this row matters more than it looks.

## Set a slide transition

Transitions and shape animations live in parts of the presentation format that python-pptx does not
model, so they can be neither read nor written with it.

## Merge presentations without losing formatting

Cloning a slide brings its layout, master and theme with it, so the merged deck looks the same as the
originals. In the test run this combined two three-slide files into a six-slide presentation with
both charts still charts rather than pictures of charts.

## Protect a presentation with a password

Encrypting the file makes it unreadable without the password. In the test run the encrypted file
could not be reopened without one, and opened normally with it.

## How to Choose

**Use python-pptx** when you are generating or editing `.pptx` files from data, your inputs are
PPTX, you never need to render, and cost or install size is a constraint. It does that job well and
it is free.

**Use Aspose.Slides for Python via .NET** when you have to render — PDF, images, HTML or video
frames — or when your inputs include legacy `.ppt` or OpenDocument files, or when you need
transitions, formatting-preserving merges or encryption. These are the cases where python-pptx does
not have a slower API; it has no API.

## FAQ

### Can I use python-pptx and Aspose.Slides in the same project?

Yes. They are independent packages with different import names, so a project can generate decks with python-pptx and use Aspose.Slides only for the conversion step.

### Why does saving with python-pptx under a .pdf name produce a file that will not open?

Because it is not a PDF. `Presentation.save()` writes the presentation package regardless of the extension you give it, so the result is a `.pptx` ZIP wearing a `.pdf` name. python-pptx has no PDF writer to call.

### Is python-pptx able to open .ppt files if I rename them to .pptx?

No. The formats are unrelated: `.pptx` is a ZIP package and `.ppt` is a binary compound file, so renaming changes nothing and the read still fails. The file has to be converted by something that understands both.

### Does Aspose.Slides write an MP4 file directly?

No. It renders the animation timeline to image frames; encoding them into MP4, WebM or GIF is a separate step with a tool such as FFmpeg, which is also where codec, bitrate and audio are decided.

### When will this comparison be checked again?
